Degree Programs of the
Graduate School of Economics, Finance, and Management (GSEFM)

GSEFM currently offers three Ph.D. programs. A hallmark of all of GSEFM's Ph.D. programs is that they feature a challenging and comprehensive two-year cycle of courses, consisting both of methodological base courses and of field courses tackling issues at the research frontier. After completing their coursework, students in GSEFM's doctoral programs carry out research in an environment conducive to the rigorous development of original ideas, including a variety of forms of structured interaction between faculty and students, student and faculty seminar series, participation in international research networks and conferences, as well as research stays with faculty abroad who are leaders in a student’s area of research. The dissertation must be a major piece of research, its chapters having the potential for publication in a peer-reviewed international scientific journal. The five Ph.D. programs currently offered by GSEFM are:

Ph.D. Program in Economics

Compelling for its strong empirical focus, the Ph.D. Program in Economics offers a two-year cycle of doctoral-level courses developed specifically to transmit a rigorous methodological framework in the three core areas of economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics), followed by courses designed to expose students to the research frontier in a variety of fields of specialization (development and international economics, econometrics, finance, law and economics, macroeconomics, marketing, and microeconomics).

Ph.D. Program in Finance

Offering in-depth coverage of both issues in asset pricing and corporate finance, the Ph.D. Program in Finance includes a two-year cycle of doctoral-level courses developed specifically to transmit a rigorous methodological framework in the core areas of finance as well as selected core areas of economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics). As for the Ph.D. Program in Economics, students in the Ph.D. Program in Finance can select from a variety of second-year field courses designed to expose students to the research frontier in their fields of specialization.

Ph.D. Program in Law and Economics

Targeted both to law and economics graduates, this program (that is also part of the Research Training Program "Law and Economics of Money and Finance") offers a two-year interdisciplinary coursework that is designed to analyze and understand the complexities particularly of monetary and financial stability. The program features a significant number of courses from the Ph.D. Program in Economics and the Ph.D. Program in Finance, enabling students to work across programs in interdisciplinary research teams.

Ph.D. Program in Management

Compelling for its in-depth coverage of microeconomic theory based insights into management questions, the Ph.D. Program in Management from 2011 onwards will offer a two-year cycle of doctoral-level courses developed specifically to transmit a rigorous methodological framework in the core areas of management as well as selected core areas of economics (including in particular microeconomics and econometrics). Students in the Ph.D. Program in Management will be able to select from a variety of second-year field courses designed to expose students to the research frontier in their fields of specialization.

Ph.D. Program in Marketing

Putting particular emphasis on the combination of marketing theory with both econometrics and microeconomics, the Ph.D. Program in Marketing from 2011 onwards will offer a two-year cycle of doctoral-level courses developed to transmit a rigorous methodological framework in the core areas of marketing as well as in microeconomics and econometrics. Students in the Ph.D. Program in Marketing will be able to select from a variety of second-year field courses designed to expose students to the research frontier in their fields of specialization, including (but not restricted to) courses in marketing, management, microeconomics, finance and econometrics.

In addition to the doctoral programs, GSEFM also offers five research-oriented, quantitative Master programs:

MSQ Programs

The Master Programs in Quantitative Economics, Quantitative Finance, Quantitative Economics and Law, Quantitative Management as well as Quantitative Marketing, are unique in that they enable first-year students to participate in the same set of analytically rigorous and quantitatively oriented courses in economics, finance, law and economics, management or marketing that are taken by first-year doctoral students. Students who complete the first year of the program with strong success have the option to join a GSEFM Ph.D.program in their area of concentration. Other students in their second year in the MSQ Programs have the option to enroll in courses with a strong emphasis on policy issues and on issues of implementation.

Summer Institutes

In the near future, GSEFM also anticipates offering summer institutes that will bring together faculty and students from GSEFM as well as from GSEFM's cooperation partners in the United States, Europe, and Asia. These summer institutes will have a topical focus, and include both lectures and research presentations.
